Balthazar King 'making progress' after breaking his ribs in the Grand National

Former Grand National runner-up Balthazar King is recovering slowly after breaking his ribs at Aintree on Saturday.

Balthazar King is steadily improving after breaking his ribs in a fall at the Grand National last weekend.

The 11-year-old was one of the favourites to win the race at Aintree but he fell at the Canal Turn, which is the eighth jump on the course.

He received treatment by vets on the track for over an hour, before being taken to Liverpool Equine Hospital.

His trainer, Philip Hobbs, told reporters: "Balthazar King has had a good 24 hours. He is very sore but is eating and seems bright in himself."

Many Clouds went on to win the race ahead of Saint Are to give jockey Leighton Aspell his second straight win in the National after he won on Pineau De Re last year.

Balthazar King finished second to Pineau De Re in that race.
