Coneygree storms to Cheltenham Gold Cup victory

Nico De Boinville rides Coneygree to Gold Cup victory at the Cheltenham Festival.

Nico De Boinville has ridden Coneygree to victory in his first Gold Cup ride at the Cheltenham Festival.

Road to Riches led the way at the start before 7/1 shot Coneygree passed by to take up the running, but On His Own soon appeared on the outside to join the front of the pack.

Last year's winner Lord Windemere dropped to the back of the field with 13 fences left to jump and appeared to be struggling, while Coneygree led by almost two lengths.

Favourite Silviniaco Conti appeared to come into contention alongside Road to Riches with four fences to jump, but his efforts came to nothing as Djackadam, ridden by Ruby Walsh, moved into third.

Djackadam (10/1) and Road to Riches (8/1) finished second and third respectively, while Tony McCoy, who is competing in his final Cheltenham Festival, on board Carlingford Lough was nowhere to be seen.

Coneygree is the first novice to win the title since 1974.
