World Cup construction worker dies

A spokesman has confirmed to Brazilian media that a construction worker has died at the World Cup stadium being built in Manaus.

The worker was involved in an accident while dismantling a crane that had been used while the roof is being installed at the Arena da Amazonia, where England are due to face Italy in the group stage of this summer's tournament.

While announcing a strike on Monday, the civil construction workers union president, Cicero Custodio, told the Lancenet: "What makes us sad is that we noticed they aren't really worried about the workers. We'll only be back to work when the authorities sit down to talk with us."

This is the third death to occur during the construction of the stadium.
