Villarreal fined under £10k after fan threw banana at Barcelona's Dani Alves

Villarreal fined for banana-throwing incident

Villarreal have been fined just under £10,000 by the Spanish Football Federation after a supporter threw a banana at Barcelona's Dani Alves in an apparent racist attack.

The fan in question received a lifetime ban from the club and has been charged with a 'breach of fundamental rights and civil liberties' by police.

The incident occurred in the second half of Barcelona's 3-2 victory at the Estadio El Madrigal on April 27.

Alves took a bite out of the fruit when it was hurled onto the pitch while the defender was lining up to take a corner.

According to the Daily Mail, the league's competition committee decided on the fine after taking into account the fact that the male supporter had been banned by Villarreal.

Alves's reaction to the incident received widespread backing from figures within football.
