Tottenham Hotspur have apologised to Canadian ice hockey legend Wayne Gretzky for spelling his name wrongly on the back of a shirt.

The 54-year-old, who is known as 'The Great One' for being the highest ever goalscorer in the National Hockey League, visited White Hart Lane prior to Spurs' Capital One Cup defeat to Arsenal.

In a pre-match presentation, former defender Ledley King handed over a number 99 shirt to the ice hockey star, but the name was misspelled 'Gretsky'.

After the match, the Premier League club's official Twitter page reached out to Gretzky to say: "Our sincere apologies to @OfficialGretzky for the shirt error. New one on its way!"

Despite the blunder, the former sportsman accepted the apology. He replied: "Not to worry @SpursOfficial It happens all the time!"

Tottenham had initially tweeted a picture of King and Gretzky posing with the shirt, but deleted it when they noticed the mistake.
