Former Real Madrid and Colombia midfielder Freddy Rincon passes away at the age of 55 after being involved in a car crash on Monday.

Former Real Madrid and Colombia midfielder Freddy Rincon has passed away at the age of 55.

On Monday, Rincon was driving a car which collided with a bus in his homeland, an incident which left him in a critical condition in hospital.

However, Laureano Quintero, the medical director of the Imbanaco Clinic in Cali, said on Wednesday: "Despite all the efforts of our teams, Freddy Eusebio Rincon Valencia has passed away."

Rincon is regarded as one of the best-ever players to represent Colombia, the midfielder currently ninth in the all-time list of appearances with 84 caps and fifth in the goals category with 17 strikes.

Ten outings were also made across three World Cups, a national team record shared with Carlos Valderrama, and his form in Colombia and for his national team earned him a period in Europe between 1993 and 1997.

In total, Rincon scored 19 league goals across 77 appearances for Parma, Napoli and Real Madrid, his most successful stint during his career coming at Corinthians where he earned four pieces of silverware across three seasons from 1997 to 2000.
