Bryan Robson hails fans at Manchester United charity event

Bryan Robson thanks the 60,000 fans who went to watch Manchester United legends take on Real Madrid legends at Old Trafford yesterday.

Former Manchester United captain Bryan Robson has thanked the fans who came to watch the charity match between United legends and Real Madrid legends yesterday.

Over 60,000 people travelled to Old Trafford for the match, which saw a Madrid team containing the likes of Zinedine Zidane, Luis Figo and Fernando Hierro triumph 2-1 over the Red Devils.

The event raised more than £800,000 for the Manchester United Foundation, and Robson believes that the fans deserve the credit for such a large sum.

"The fans yesterday were magnificent and they really made the occasion special. It's unbelievable to think that over 60,000 people would come to a charity game and I think the incredible atmosphere they created is something the players will never forget," said Robson.

"We had some truly great players on show yesterday and some great entertainment from JLS, Amelia Lily and Tinchy Stryder but it was the fans that made everything possible.

"We've raised over £800,000 for a fantastic cause and that money will go to helping young people that need help to build their trust and confidence in some of the most difficult communities imaginable. It's a shame we couldn't deliver the result but the Foundation was the winner yesterday."

Fernando Morientes and Ruben de la Red were on the scoresheet for Madrid, while Ruud van Nistelrooy netted for United.
