The BBC announces plans to broadcast this weekend's FA Cup semi-final, as well as next month's final, in Ultra HD for the first time.

The BBC has announced that it will broadcast this weekend's FA Cup semi-final between Manchester City and Brighton & Hove Albion live in Ultra HD via BBC iPlayer.

Viewers with UHD-enabled TV screens will be able to watch the game - due to kick off at 5.30pm on Saturday - by pressing the red button while watching live coverage on BBC One or by accessing the UHD stream of the game through the iPlayer app.

The stream will be provided over viewers' home broadband connections, requiring a minimum connection speed of 20Mbps for 2560-pixel UHD and 40Mbps for full 3840-pixel UHD.

The BBC previously broadcast select games from last year's World Cup in UHD and will also air this year's FA Cup final in May in UHD as it continues to test the technology ahead of more widespread use in the future.

In a statement the broadcaster confirmed that the number of viewers able to access the UHD stream will be capped in the "tens of thousands", meaning that it will effectively be offered on a first-come, first-served basis.

The weekend's other semi-final - a clash between Premier League high-flyers Wolverhampton Wanderers and Watford on Sunday afternoon - will also be broadcast in UHD via BT Sport.
