Liverpool fans told to avoid walk to Stadio Olimpico

Liverpool supporters are told that they should not entertain walking to Roma's Stadio Olimpico on Wednesday night 'under any circumstances' due to safety concerns.

Liverpool have released a statement to encourage supporters not to walk to the Stadio Olimpico ahead of the Champions League clash with Roma.

Ahead of the first leg of the semi-final tie at Anfield, a group of around 80 Roma supporters launched an unprovoked attack on Liverpool fans standing outside of a pub near the ground.

Irishman Sean Cox has spent over a week in hospital and remains in a critical condition as a result of the attack and there are fears that further incidents could take place ahead of Wednesday's meeting in Italy.

A statement read: "Supporters are strongly advised to use the available shuttle buses to the stadium, which will run from Piazzale delle Canestre, Villa Borghese, starting from 4pm. Under no circumstances should supporters attempt to walk to the Stadio Olimpico.

"The post-match hold-back is likely to be long, during which time the game will be replayed on a big screen, and the club would ask supporters to remain patient throughout this process. The club has been advised that during the hold-back facilities will remain open."

A report has suggested that Liverpool supporters will remain inside the ground after the match until 1am, local time.
