Charlton Athletic LGBT fans attacked by "thugs" in homophobic "hoax"

A group of LGBT Charlton Athletic supporters suffer a homophobic attack by "thugs" prior to their team's Championship match against Brighton.

A group of LGBT Charlton Athletic supporters were attacked by "thugs" after being lured into a "hoax" meeting.

The Charlton Rainbows were invited to meet up with another group prior to the Addicks' 1-0 win over Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday.

However, it became clear that the fellow 'gay-friendly' group didn't exist when a number of Charlton's members were attacked upon arriving at the meeting place.

The Charlton Rainbows released a statement on Sunday, which read: "Before yesterday's match, we were told to meet a group equivalent to ours. Unfortunately, this was a hoax and some members were attacked.

"An investigation's ongoing with CCTV and statements being taken. We would like to say that the fans involved were neither BHAFC or CAFC.

"Our members shaken, but OK. We can't give more info as this is a criminal matter, but the thugs will be caught. We would also like to thank the public who helped and the emergency services for their quick response and actions #LookAtThePositives."

The members have received widespread support from other lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender groups, including those at Arsenal, Southampton and Tottenham Hotspur.
