A new search for missing Cardiff City striker Emiliano Sala gets underway after more than £260,000 is raised in private funds.

A new search to find the missing Cardiff City striker Emiliano Sala has got underway after more than £260,000 was raised in private funds.

The 28-year-old was travelling from former club Nantes to the Welsh capital on Monday night - just two days after becoming the Bluebirds' £15m record signing - when his plane disappeared off radar.

A search and rescue operation was immediately launched but was called off on Thursday after organisers deemed the chances of survival to be "extremely remote".

A private fundraising effort has brought in more than £260,000 over the last few days thanks to donations from across the footballing world, including significant sums from the likes of Ilkay Gundogan, Adrien Rabiot and Corentin Tolisso.

In a statement issued on Saturday, Sala's family confirmed that the search has now resumed with two boats scouring an area of the English Channel where the plane could have crashed.

The previous unsuccessful search had involved three boats, five helicopters and two lifeboats.
