Body found in Emiliano Sala plane wreckage

Divers find a body in the wreckage of the plane which was carrying missing Cardiff City striker Emiliano Sala and pilot David Ibbotson.

Divers have found a body in the wreckage of the plane which was carrying missing Cardiff City striker Emiliano Sala and pilot David Ibbotson.

The Piper Malibu aircraft was found on the seabed of the English Channel during searches by private investigators on Sunday morning.

Further underwater searches have been taking place today, and it has now been confirmed that one occupant has been seen in the wreckage.

"The remotely operated vehicle (ROV) carried out a further search of the area overnight, but did not identify any additional pieces of wreckage," read a statement from the Air Accident Investigation Branch (AAIB).

"Tragically, in video footage from the ROV, one occupant is visible amidst the wreckage. The AAIB is now considering the next steps, in consultation with the families of the pilot and passenger, and the police."

It is as yet unclear whether the occupant is Sala or Ibbotson, or where the second occupant could be.

The plane went missing on Monday, January 21 during a flight from Nantes to Cardiff, where Sala was due to meet up with his new teammates after completing a club-record £15m switch to the Bluebirds.
