Samuel Eto'o facing 10-year prison sentence?

Former Barcelona striker Samuel Eto'o could face more than 10 years in prison for alleged tax offences during his time at the Spanish club.

Former Barcelona striker Samuel Eto'o could face more than 10 years in prison for alleged tax crimes during his time with the Spanish outfit.

Court documents released on Thursday revealed that prosecutors are pushing for a prison term of 10 years and six months in addition to a fine of more than £12m for four counts of tax fraud.

Eto'o is alleged to have defrauded Spain's tax authority of just under £2.5m between 2006 and 2009, when he left Barca to join Inter Milan.

Prosecutors are also pushing for Eto'o's representative Jose Maria Mesalles Mata to receive the same punishment, while Manuel de Jesus Lastre Abreu - the administrator of a company that facilitated the deals - faces more than six years in prison and a fine of £1.8m.

Eto'o is the latest Barcelona player to face investigations over tax issues, with Lionel Messi, Neymar, Javier Mascherano and Adriano all being the subject of legal problems.

Eto'o, who currently plays with Antalyaspor in Turkey, has scored more than 350 goals for club and country throughout his career.
