Arsenal, Liverpool 'powerless to stop proposed Christmas Eve clash'

Arsenal, Liverpool 'cannot block Xmas Eve clash'

Arsenal and Liverpool are reportedly powerless to prevent the Premier League and Sky Sports from pushing ahead with their plans to show the clash between the two sides on Christmas Eve.

It emerged earlier this week that the high-profile meeting between the potential title challengers at the Emirates Stadium could be pushed back a day for live television coverage.

Both clubs have been left unhappy with the proposed fixture change, though, as it would make it difficult for supporters to attend the game - the first in Premier League history to be staged on December 24.

According to The Times, Sky Sports remains keen to air a festive 'Super Sunday' fixture and they are continuing discussions with league chiefs, as well as the Metropolitan Police.

It is claimed that Arsenal and Liverpool have already essentially given the Premier League permission to sell central broadcasting rights on their behalf, meaning that they cannot veto any decision to alter the kickoff date or time.
