Czech Republic's David Svoboda equals Olympic record in fencing

Svoboda leads modern pentathlon

Czech Republic's David Svoboda leads the modern pentathlon after 26 victories in the fencing, equalling an Olympic record by achieving 1,024 points.

Aleksander Lesun of Russia ended the fencing stage in second place, having earned 1,000 points with 25 victories and 12 defeats.

China's Cao Zhongrong finished level with Lesun, while Deniss Cerkovskis finished just behind him with 952 points.

Great Britain's entrants Nicholas Woodbridge and Samuel Weale both finished with identical records - 17 wins and 18 defeats - to end up in joint 13th place on 808 points.

The athletes will now head to the Aquatics Centre for the swimming stage of the competition this afternoon.
