Dutch gymnast Yuri van Gelder sent home from Rio after having boozy night out

Dutch gymnast Yuri van Gelder has been kicked off the Olympic team after going out drinking in Rio de Janeiro.

The 33-year-old, who was crowned rings world champion in 2005, violated the Netherlands' team rules regarding alcohol by going out on Saturday evening.

Van Gelder also left the team base without permission and returned to the Athletes' Village in the early hours of Sunday morning.

A statement from Dutch team chef de mission Maurits Hendriks read: "It's terrible for Yuri, but this kind of behaviour is unacceptable. In sports terms this is a disaster, but we had no other choice given the violation of our values."

Seven years ago, Van Gelder was suspended from the Dutch Gymnastics Union for taking cocaine three days before the start of the national championships.
