Christian Basson three clear at Alfred Dunhill Championship

Home favourite Christian Basson posts an eight-under-par 64 to lead the Alfred Dunhill Championship after a weather-interrupted first day in Malelane.

South African Christian Basson has taken a three-shot lead after a weather-interrupted first day at the Alfred Dunhill Championship in Malelane.

The world number 561 shot by far the round of the day with a balanced, bogey-free 64 at Leopard Creek Country Club to sit atop the leaderboard on eight-under.

The three highest-ranked players in the field are also South African as Branden Grace (-1), the defending champion, and last year's runner-up Louis Oosthuizen (-2) both posted under-par totals.

World number 50 Charl Schwartzel still has one hole to play and is one of three players in a tie for second on five-under.

Thirty-nine players in total failed to complete their opening rounds in the European Tour's first event of the 2016 season due to the threat of lightning. The first round will resume at 6.30am local time tomorrow.
