Rory McIlroy delighted with response to mistakes at Valhalla

McIlroy proud of comeback at Valhalla

Rory McIlroy has revealed that he took pride in the way he responded to errors on the opening day of the US PGA Championship at Valhalla.

Despite finishing the day just one shot behind the leaders on five-under-par, it looked like the world number one was in trouble at one stage on Thursday when he carded a bogey with a three-putt on the 11th hole to fall back to level-par just moments after a double bogey on 10.

"Things like 10 happen, you hit bad shots every now and again," McIlroy told Sky Sports News. "I was really annoyed with myself to bogey the next hole as well, not to shake that off.

"Three-putting after making double on 10, my response after that was really good, and it shows mentally where I am at with my game.

"I'm really happy with the five-under start."

McIlroy arrived at Valhalla on the back of successive victories at the Open Championship and Bridgestone Invitational.
