Andrew Coltart: 'Colin Montgomerie should withdraw Ryder Cup captaincy'

Coltart against Montgomerie captaincy

Former European Ryder Cup player Andrew Coltart believes that it would be unfair to appoint Colin Montgomerie as the captain for the 2014 tournament for a second time.

Reports emerged yesterday claiming that the Scotsman feels confident that he will be voted to lead Europe next year at Gleneagles, despite already captaining the side to success in 2010 at Celtic Manor.

"He was instrumental in laying down this unwritten rule that you should only have one crack at it," Coltart told BBC Radio Five Live.

"He's had his go and in my mind it's time for him to do the decent thing, withdraw his name, thank people for the support and really get behind the protagonists for the next potential captains."

A meeting will be held today in Abu Dhabi to decide who will captain the team against the USA, who will be led by Tom Watson.
