Pepperell shoots himself into contention

A third round of six-under has brought Englishman Eddie Pepperell into contention ahead of the final day of The Open at St Andrews.

Following his opening round on Thursday and his second outing, which was split over two days due to the inclement weather in Fife, the 24-year-old headed into today's 18 holes on two-under.

That handed him a share of 38th place, but by the time that he had reached the 17th hole this afternoon, the tournament debutant was level with leader Dustin Johnson on 10-under.

Pepperell dropped two shots on the 17th, before he secured a par on the final hole to finish on eight-under with a round still to be completed tomorrow.

The Abingdon-based player, who turned professional in 2011, has only ever played at one previous Major - the US Open two years ago, where he missed the cut.
