Rory McIlroy blames the weather conditions for his poor showing at the 2011 Open at Sandwich.

Rory McIlroy has blamed treacherous weather conditions for his poor showing at the 2011 Open.

The 22-year-old was one of a number of golfers who struggled with the wind and rain at Sandwich, eventually finishing tied for 25th.

"I am not a fan of golf tournaments where the outcome is predicted so much by the weather, it is not my sort of golf," the 2011 US Open champion explained.

"My game is suited for basically any golf course and most conditions, but these conditions I just don't enjoy playing in. That's the bottom line."

Fellow Northern Irishman Darren Clarke dealt considerably better with the elements as he claimed his first Major victory.
