Graeme McDowell happy with improvement ahead of The Open

Graeme McDowell claims that he is closing in on his best form ahead of The Open at St Andrews this week.

Graeme McDowell has claimed that he is confident of producing a strong challenge at The Open this week.

Poor form this year has seen the Northern Irishman drop out of the world's top 50, but McDowell is confident that he is closing in on his best form after a promising display at the Scottish Open.

"I'd love to get my name on the Claret Jug and this is one of the venues where I think I could do it," the 35-year-old told reporters at St Andrews.

"I was decent last week, particularly in the first two rounds, and the confidence is coming back.

"I feel like I am turning the corner. I'm starting to play better and I just need some results to back that up. It's not been that good a season but this week could be a phenomenal week to turn things round."

McDowell finished in a tie for 23rd place when The Open was last held at St Andrews in 2010.
