Ian Poulter qualifies for The Open

Ian Poulter comes through a 36-hole competition at Woburn to qualify for The Open, which will be staged at Royal Birkdale later this month.

Ian Poulter has booked his place at this month's Open Championship after coming through a 36-hole qualifying competition at Woburn.

The Englishman has dropped down the world rankings as a result of injury and loss of form, and he has not featured at a Major since last year's Masters at Augusta.

However, with three places up for grabs at Royal Birkdale later this month, Poulter put together rounds of 70 and 68 to finish in a share of second place.

In an impressive showing, Poulter made just one bogey throughout Tuesday as he joined both Shiv Kapur and Toby Tree in making the third Major of the year.

When the tournament was last staged at the North-West course in 2008, Poulter finished in second place behind winner Padraig Harrington.

Earlier this year, Poulter claimed the runners-up spot at the Players Championship to regain his position back inside the world's top 100.

Four more qualifying tournaments were held around Great Britain on Tuesday with 12 other players claiming places at the event.
