Lewis Hamilton qualifies on pole in Baku, Sebastian Vettel fourth

Lewis Hamilton edges out Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas to finish on pole ahead of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.

Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton has qualified on pole for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, while title rival Sebastian Vettel could only manage fourth.

The Briton recovered after a shaky start which saw him make an error on the first lap, managing to do enough to edge out teammate Valtteri Bottas for top spot.

Hamilton produced a strong finish in Baku to top the standings, snatching pole from the grasp of Bottas by 0.434s.

Kimi Raikkonen finished third, meanwhile, and fellow Ferrari driver and title challenger Vettel will start Sunday's race one place lower.

It is the 66th time that Hamilton has claimed pole in his career to date, surpassing Ayrton Senna's career haul of 65, which helps to banish his bad memories from this course last year.

Vettel leads Hamilton by 12 points in the standings heading into Sunday's race.
