Lewis Hamilton fastest before crashing in wet P2 at Canadian Grand Prix

Lewis Hamilton sets the fastest time in the second practice session for the Canadian Grand Prix shortly before crashing his Mercedes.

Lewis Hamilton has set the fastest time in the second practice session for this weekend's Canadian Grand Prix, despite crashing midway through a rain-affected run at the Gilles Villeneuve Circuit this evening.

With rain forecast, most of the cars were out on track early in a bid to get some dry laps in, resulting in Ferrari duo Kimi Raikkonen and Sebastian Vettel leading the charge early on.

Hamilton soon took over at the top of the leaderboard but once the showers hit, the world champion ended up in the barrier after aquaplaning, resulting in the session being red flagged with 40 minutes to go.

Hamilton's Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg completed the top four, while Lotus showed strong pace as Pastor Maldonado came in fifth, with Romain Grosjean seventh.

With no sign of the weather improving, the remaining 19 cars stayed in their garages for the rest of the session to avoid following Hamilton into the barrier.
