An unscheduled gearbox changes results in Michael Schumacher being handed a five-place penalty on the grid for this afternoon's Bahrain Grand Prix.

Michael Schumacher has been demoted five places on the grid for this afternoon's Bahrain Grand Prix.

The German driver has been handed the punishment because of an unscheduled gearbox change.

As a result the seven-time world champion will begin the race in 22nd spot, despite qualifying in 17th.

Williams driver Pastor Maldonado has also been given a five-place penalty for a similar gearbox change.
