United States President Barack Obama has given a "shout out" to the USA's women's football team for clinching gold at the Olympic Games.

The Americans defeated Japan 2-1 at Wembley Stadium last night courtesy of a brace from Carli Lloyd.

"We have to give a special shout out to the women's soccer team today avenging the loss in the World Cup," said Obama.

Meanwhile, Canada overcame France 1-0 to secure the bronze medal.
