Republic of Ireland earn draw in Sweden

The Republic of Ireland have earned a 0-0 draw in Sweden to keep their hopes of World Cup qualification alive.

Shane Long had an early opening for the visitors, but he could only fire over after weaving his way through the Swedish defence.

Ireland goalkeeper David Forde was then called into action twice in quick succession as he kept out efforts from Tobias Hysen and Kim Kallstrom.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic had a final chance in the first half for the home side, only to see his shot deflect off John O'Shea and go narrowly wide.

Both teams struggled to get going at the start of the second period as the hosts in particular looked short of ideas.

Ibrahimovic was starved of service up front as the Irish frustrated their opponents.
