Southampton boss Mauricio Pochettino: 'Luke Shaw deserves England call-up'

Southampton manager Mauricio Pochettino insists that Luke Shaw 'deserves' his first England call-up to the senior team.

Southampton manager Mauricio Pochettino has praised left-back Luke Shaw for receiving his first call-up to the England senior team.

The 18-year-old had a tearful reaction to the news that he has been included in Roy Hodgson's Three Lions squad for next Wednesday's friendly against Denmark.

Shaw now joins his Southampton teammates Jay Rodriguez, Adam Lallana and Rickie Lambert, who have all been called up by England over the course of the season.

"All of our players who have been called up by England fully deserve it," Southampton's official Twitter page quotes Pochettino as saying. "Credit to them all.

"If Roy Hodgson has picked [Shaw] for England, it's because he thinks he can do well. We need to enjoy this moment. Luke should enjoy this, just as Jay, Rickie and Adam did with their first call-ups."

Shaw could rival Ashley Cole and Leighton Baines for the left-back spot in the England squad at this summer's World Cup in Brazil.
