Nigel Adkins believes that the record crowd at St Mary's Stadium last night would have enjoyed their victory over West Ham United.

The largest crowd ever recorded at the St Mary's Stadium witnessed Southampton open up a five-point lead at the top of the Championship yesterday evening with a 1-0 victory over West Ham United.

Saints manager Nigel Adkins believes that the 32,152 in attendance would have been "well entertained" by what was on show.

"32,152 people have been well entertained tonight," he told the club's official website. "I thought we played some very entertaining football in the first half and it was a great goal from Jos Hooiveld to give us the lead from a set play.

"It was another victory at home in front of our own [fans] and long may that continue."

Next up for the league leaders is a trip to Reading on Saturday evening.
