FC Twente 1-0 Schalke

Steve McClaren's FC Twente have earned a narrow 1-0 home win over Schalke in the first leg of their Europa League last-16 tie.

The winner came on the hour as Luuk De Jong was felled by Joel Matip in the area. Matip was shown a straight red card for the challenge before De Jong dusted himself down to convert the penalty.

Leroy Fer and Nacer Chadli could have doubled the home side's lead, but Schalke hung on to give themselves more than a chance in the return leg.
