England Under-21s win in Czech Republic

Young Lions win in Czech Republic

Captain for the night Tom Carroll scored the only goal of the game as England's Under-21s won their friendly against Czech Republic 1-0 this evening.

The Tottenham Hotspur midfielder was given the armband in the absence of several of his fellow regulars and struck a 48th-minute winner in Prague.

The Swansea City loanee was needed at the other end of the pitch in the first half as he positioned himself well to clear a shot from Watford's Matej Vydra off the line.

Carroll made another crucial contribution when he poked home from close range shortly into the second half, after a Calum Chambers cross had been parried by the Czech keeper.

England manager Gareth Southgate used the remainder of the game to give run-outs to all of the six substitutes that he had available to him, with Everton's Luke Garbutt and Southampton's Matt Targett among those to feature from the bench.

Jesse Lingard nearly made sure of the result when he shot just wide from Nathan Redmond's delivery late on, and England maintained their clean sheet to win on a night when the senior team were also victors.
