O'Shea withdraws from Ireland squad

Sunderland defender John O'Shea has pulled out of the Republic of Ireland squad for Tuesday's trip to Russia.

The 30-year-old has been forced to withdraw due to calf and hip strains sustained during Ireland's 0-0 draw with Slovakia on Friday evening.

"The Football Association of Ireland today confirmed that following medical examination, John O'Shea has been declared unfit to take part in Tuesday's Euro 2012 qualifier against Russia," read a statement on the Football Association of Ireland's website.

"John was suffering from a calf and hip strain and will return to his club later this evening."

Goalkeeper Shay Given has also been rated a doubt for the match in Moscow with a back problem.
