Iker Casillas: 'Luka Modric is welcome at Real Madrid'

Casillas: 'Modric is welcome'

Real Madrid captain Iker Casillas has said that Tottenham Hotspur playmaker Luka Modric would be welcomed by everyone at the club.

The Croatia international playmaker has been strongly linked with a switch to the Santiago Bernabeu this summer, and even refused to join Spurs for pre-season training in an effort to force the move.

A number of Madrid players have spoken in favour of Modric joining Madrid in recent days, and Casillas is the latest to give his support.

"I know him and he's a great player," the Spain international goalkeeper told reporters.

"He performed quite well at the European Championship and if Real Madrid and [coach Jose] Mourinho think he will be a good signing for the club, then there is a reason for that.

"The manager always has the good of the club in mind and if Modric can help us go that step further, then he will be welcomed."

Modric is expected to be the replacement for Kaka, who has been linked with a move back to AC Milan this summer.

However, Casillas has given the hint that he would like the Brazilian to remain with the club.

"We want to help him," he explained. "It is important for us that a player of his stature is part of this squad.

"As teammates and professionals, we want the best for him. He is an example for all of us."

Madrid are currently on a pre-season tour of the United States.
