Gareth Bale: "We just weren't good enough"

Gareth Bale admits that his Real Madrid side "just weren't good enough" as they went down 2-0 to Wolfsburg in Germany.

Real Madrid winger Gareth Bale has rued his side's performance after they slumped to a surprise 2-0 defeat to Wolfsburg in the first leg of their Champions League encounter.

Zinedine Zidane's side had a goal ruled out for offside and a penalty shout denied as they were stunned by the Germans, just days after they claimed the scalp of fierce rivals Barcelona at Camp Nou.

"Obviously we expected to win the game but things like this can happen in football," Bale told BT Sport. "We know it wasn't a great performance tonight but we know it's only halfway through and we've got time to put it right.

"We've had time to recover. No excuses, we just weren't good enough tonight. It happens in football, it happens all the time. We need to make sure come the second leg that we're on it and win by three goals."

Los Blancos are back in league action this Saturday when they welcome Eibar to the Bernabeu ahead of the return leg with Wolfsburg next Tuesday.
