Robert Lewandowski: 'Poland are better than Republic of Ireland'

Lewandowski: 'Poland deserve qualification'

Poland striker Robert Lewandowski has claimed that justice was served after his nation secured automatic qualification into Euro 2016 ahead of the Republic of Ireland.

Lewandowski proved the match-winner as his 42nd-minute header re-established the lead after Jonathan Walters's penalty cancelled out Grzegorz Krychowiak's opener in Warsaw last night.

The visitors' equaliser was shrouded in controversy after referee Cuneyt Cakir pointed to the spot after Kamil Glik appeared to foul Shane Long outside the box.

"We deserved to qualify. We were better than Ireland," he said to Polsat Sport. "There are small details which can improve our game. But this bodes well for the future.

"I believed in these guys. Our goal was always to progress to France in these qualifiers. We deserved an automatic place, not the playoffs."

The Poles finished second in Group D, one point behind Germany.
