Northern Ireland 1-1 Luxembourg

Northern Ireland can only draw 1-1 with Luxembourg after a late equaliser for the visitors.

Northern Ireland have been held to a 1-1 draw by Luxembourg in their World Cup qualifier this evening.

The hosts took the lead after less than 15 minutes when Jonny Evans strode forward before sliding the ball through to Dean Shiels, who slotted his side into a 1-0 lead.

Northern Ireland then had two goals disallowed in quick succession; the first when Evans nodded in a cross, only to be told Kyle Lafferty had committed a foul in the build up, and the second when Lafferty was called offside before finishing from 20 yards.

Lafferty and Chris Baird both came close on the stroke of half-time, but both of their efforts flew narrowly wide. Shane Ferguson then had another goal disallowed 15 minutes into the second half, again for an offside.

Joubert made a couple of good saves from Lafferty and Jamie Ward with 10 minutes of the match left before Chris Brunt hit the post five minutes later.

Northern Irish hearts were broken just one minute later when Daniel da Mota's effort deflected off Ryan McGivern and past Roy Carroll to give Luxembourg a late equaliser.
