Ynysddu Welfare hope to avoid punishment for smoke bombs and pitch invasion

The Gwent side progressed in the FAW Youth Cup after being assembled following a social media appeal.

Ynysddu Welfare could end up in disciplinary trouble after their fairytale Welsh Youth Cup triumph.

The team did not exist before being mistakenly entered for the FAW Youth Cup, but a side was put together following a huge nationwide response to the story on social media.

Ynysddu held only one training session for their hastily-assembled squad, but still managed to eliminate Briton Ferry on penalties after a 2-2 draw on Sunday.

The victory, however, was marred by a pitch invasion during the shoot-out and Ynysddu supporters setting off smoke bombs both before and during the game.

A Football Association of Wales spokesman said: "We are waiting on the referee's report to see if any action needs to be taken."

Ynysddu, if charged and found guilty, could be fined but manager Ben Murphy does not believe the club has a case to answer.

"Everybody said what a great atmosphere it was on the day," Murphy told Press Association Sport.

"I spoke to the referee after the game and he didn't say anything other than what a wonderful day it was.

"The smoke bombs were small hand-held devices and certainly not illegal, while the mini-pitch invasion was a result of some fans thinking we had won the shoot-out at a time when we had not.

"They took the lead from some of our players who thought we had won, but you could not blame them for failing to keep the score because there were a lot of penalties."

Ynysddu discovered on Monday that their prize for beating Briton Ferry is a second-round trip to Welsh Premier Academy side Llanelli on November 4.

The Gwent outfit might have missed out on a plum tie against Craig Bellamy's Cardiff youngsters, but Murphy is still pinching himself after a "whirlwind" few weeks.

He said: "It's been a surreal experience and to get through to the next round make it all worthwhile.

"We had to cancel our second training session (on Monday) because the young lads couldn't walk and the senior lads had hangovers after celebrating the win too much!

"But we'll go down to Llanelli in the next round and give it our best shot.

"A couple of teams have offered us friendlies, so hopefully we'll be able to play a few games before then."
