Player attacked in Romanian match

A Romanian Liga I match between Steaua Bucharest and Petrolul Ploiesti was abandoned on Sunday after extraordinary scenes of violence broke out on the pitch.

The incident happened seconds before half time when a fan ran out onto the field and punched Steaua defender and Romanian international George Galamaz.

Footage shows Steaua players rushing to help their teammate before police intervened.

Serbian defender Novak Martinovic and keeper Razvan Stanca both received red cards for retaliating against the attacker.

The match was later abandoned by the referee when a flare was thrown onto the pitch.
