Nigerian defender dies on pitch

Nigerian defender Bobsam Elejiko collapsed and died while playing for Belgian club Merksem S.C. yesterday afternoon.

Attempts were made to resuscitate the 30-year-old, but they proved to be unsuccessful.

So far, no cause has been given for his death, although early reports have suggested his heart may have failed.

"With deep sadness we announce the sudden death of Bobsam Elejiko," Merksem said in a statement.

"He collapsed and died suddenly on the pitch and our thoughts are with his family and friends."

West Bromwich Albion striker and compatriot Peter Odemwingie paid tribute to Elejiko on his Twitter account.

"Rest in peace my brother, Bobsam Elejiko. Heart failure during a match this noon in Belgium. Will not leave your wife&boys without attention," said the centre-forward.

Merksem's fifth-tier match against FC Kaart was abandoned following Elejiko's death.
