Diego Maradona says that he still hopes to remain as Al Wasl manager, despite being sacked by the Dubai club two days ago.

Diego Maradona has revealed that he retains hope of remaining as the manager of Al Wasl, despite the club sacking him two days ago.

The Pro-League club, based in the United Arab Emirates, terminated the Argentinian's contract after a poor start to the season.

However, Maradona has responded to his dismissal by insisting that he remains hopeful that the Al Wasl hierarchy may have second thoughts about their decision.

In a statement published on his website, Maradona said: "It is always my wish to stay in this wonderful land but the club have made a statement I don't agree with.

"I hope to have a meeting with the club soon, and I hope we can come to a good agreement."

Maradona was dismissed as the Dubai club's manager midway through a two-year deal.
