Former FIFA president Joao Havelange in hospital

Former FIFA president Joao Havelange has been hospitalised in Brazil with a lung infection.

The 98-year-old, who was head of football's governing body from 1974 to 1998, is in a stable condition, according to doctors at the Rio de Janeiro medical facility.

Havelange has been in hospital since Wednesday, but the information has not been confirmed until now.

As well as taking up the most senior role at FIFA, Havelange was president of the Brazilian football confederation, and oversaw their first three World Cups victories, in 1958, 1962 and 1970.
