FIFA communications chief Walter De Gregorio quits role

FIFA's director of communications and public affairs Walter De Gregorio steps down from his role.

Walter De Gregorio has stepped down from the role of director of communications and public affairs at FIFA.

De Gregorio had been in the position for almost five years and will continue to consult football's governing body before leaving at the end of the calendar year.

"Walter has worked incredibly hard for the past four years and we are immensely grateful for all he has done," FIFA general secretary general Jerome Valcke said in a statement.

"I am glad we will be able to continue to draw on his expertise until the end of the year."

De Gregorio was a senior aide to outgoing president Sepp Blatter, who also announced his decision to resign last week.

According to PA reporter Martyn Ziegler, De Gregorio has quit after making the below joke about the unravelling of FIFA on Swiss television.

Meanwhile, BBC Sport's Richard Conway has claimed that an article in Swiss publication Klein Report also led to a confrontation between De Gregorio and Blatter which resulted in the former being asked to quit by the FIFA president.ID:227515: cacheID:227515:1false2false3false:QQ:: from db desktop :LenBod:restore:2467:
