FA Cup notes

X were not the only Premier League team to suffer heartache in bitterly cold temperatures, as West Ham United's FA Cup run came to a swift end in a surprise 1-0 defeat to Championship outfit Bristol City, who advanced to meet Nottingham Forest or Blackpool in round four.

The Robins capitalised on a defensive mix-up to draw first blood with just three minutes on the clock, as Tommy Conway rolled the ball into an empty net after Dinos Mavropanos sold Lukasz Fabianski short from a backpass.

Danny Ings cut an isolated figure at the tip of the Hammers' attack, and the visitors' uphill climb was made even steeper when Said Benrahma was given a straight red card for kicking out at Joe Williams in the 51st minute.

Luton Town managed to avoid going out to a lower-league side, though, overcoming League One outfit Bolton Wanderers 2-1 at the Toughsheet Community Stadium, where Dion Charles gave the Trotters the lead in the 11th minute.

Tahith Chong wiped out Bolton's lead just four minutes later, though, and Chiedozie Ogbene completed the turnaround for Rob Edwards's side in the 57th minute, sending the Hatters through to a fourth-round tie with either Crystal Palace or Everton.

Over at Eastleigh's Silverlake Stadium, the National League side's dreams of a home showdown with Manchester United crashed and burned, as League Two Newport County prevailed 3-1 to earn a date with the Red Devils.

Aaron Wildig began the Newport goal rush in the third minute before James Clarke and Will Evans got in on the act in the second half, rendering Paul McCallum's leveller for Eastleigh inconsequential.

Finally, the all-Championship contest between Birmingham City and Hull City was seemingly going the way of the Tigers, who drew first blood in the 12th minute of their replay at St Andrew's through Jason Lokilo.

Jay Stansfield got Birmingham back on level terms with 66 minutes on the clock, though, and Koji Miyoshi's injury-time strike ensured that Tony Mowbray's side would head to Leicester City on January 27.
