Newcastle Jets come out on top in basement battle against Western Sydney

Goals from Enver Alivodic and Lee Ki-je help Newcastle Jets on their way to a 2-1 victory over Western Sydney Wanderers at the foot of the A-League ladder.

Newcastle Jets have climbed off the foot of the A-League ladder with a 2-1 victory over fellow strugglers Western Sydney Wanderers at the Parramatta Stadium.

It was the visitors who made the breakthrough in the big meeting at the bottom of the table, as Enver Alivodic kept his composure to tuck the ball away following a hectic start which saw chances fall the way of both sides.

Ben Kennedy was called into action just moments later to deny Wanderers levelling things up, although the division's bottom-placed side were perhaps a little fortunate not to find themselves two goals behind when Edson Montano had a strike wrongly ruled out for offside.

The Novocastrians did soon have the ball in the back of the net once more, however, as Lee Ki-je found a way through to put his side well in command heading into the interval.

Nick Kalmar pulled one back six minutes after the restart to ensure that it was game on in Sydney, but they struggled to muster any chances in front of their 10,000 supporters in the second half as the Jets picked up a valuable win in the West.

The defeat leaves WSW bottom of the A-League ladder, although they still have a game in hand over their opponents who sit three points above them.
