France into last 16 of Women's World Cup after Mexico rout

France thump Mexico in Moncton to reach the last 16 of the Women's World Cup.

France will go into the last 16 of the Women's World Cup after an emphatic win over Mexico in Moncton secured their passage.

Les Bleus suffered a shock defeat at the hands of Colombia at the weekend, leaving them in danger of being knocked out, but three goals in the first 13 minutes were enough for the French to progress.

France's Elodie Thomis (L), Amandine Henry (C) and Sabrina Delannoy celebrate Henry's goal against Mexico during their 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup Group F football match at Lansdowne Stadium in Ottawa, Ontario on June 17, 2015

Their first goal came within 60 seconds as Cecilia Santiago could only parry a cross for Marie-Laure Delie to head home from close range.

Mexico's slim hopes of reaching the second round were all but ended in the ninth minute when Jennifer Ruiz put through her own net.

France wrapped up victory inside 13 minutes when Eugenie Le Sommer, who scored the winning goal to beat England in their opening game, netted again for Philippe Bergeroo's team.

Le Sommer scored her second of the game nine minutes before the interval as France threatened to run riot.

Gaetane Thiney and Elodie Thomis wasted further chances as Les Bleus sought a fifth goal, but they breached the Mexican defence with 10 minutes remaining after Amadine Henry's fizzing strike beat a helpless Santiago.

France will now face the runner-up from Group E in the second round.
