Late goals against Bordeaux put Marseille back at top of Ligue 1

Late goal blitz gives Marseille win

Marseille have climbed back to the top of Ligue 1 after two goals in the last five minutes of their clash against Bordeaux gave Les Phoceens a 3-1 win at the Stade Velodrome this evening.

The visitors had the first chance of the game when Thomas Toure drove into the box in the fifth minute and attempted a shot, but Marseille goalkeeper Steve Mandanda was able to save.

Dimitri Payet forced a save from Cedric Carrasso five minutes later, but Bordeaux countered through Jaroslav Plasil and Toure.

The hosts then went on to dominate proceedings, with Florian Thauvin, Abdel Barrada and Payet all coming close in a frantic two-minute spell midway through the first half.

Despite Marseille overwhelming their opponents, the first half would end all square, but the second half would provide a glut of goals.

Toure began by breaking the deadlock for the visitors in the 55th minute after tucking the ball from close range into the bottom corner.

Marseille then equalised five minutes later when Payet's cross fell to Mario Lemina, who duly nodded home from close range.

Just as it seemed like the game would end all square, the home side struck two quickfire goals in the final five minutes of the match to steal all three points.

First Andre-Pierre Gignac headed into the net following another pinpoint Payet cross in the 85th minute, before Michy Batshuayi poked home into the bottom corner with just a minute left of normal time.

The result means that Marseille climb back to first place in the league, just one point ahead of Paris Saint-Germain, while Bordeaux remain fifth.
