Ajax chief executive Edwin van der Sar opens the door for Manchester United to sign Donny van de Beek this summer.

Ajax chief executive Edwin van der Sar has opened the door for Manchester United to sign Dutch midfielder Donny van de Beek during this summer's transfer window.

The Netherlands international has allegedly emerged as a leading target for the Red Devils, who could be forced to replace Paul Pogba ahead of the 2020-21 campaign.

Van der Sar has admitted that the 23-year-old is likely to leave Amsterdam this summer, although the former United goalkeeper has insisted that there will not be a discount for the Dutchman despite the financial impact of the coronavirus outbreak.

"In January last year, people said we were going to lose seven or eight players but we lost only two key members,' Van der Sar told Reuters.

"The big clubs such as Bayern Munich have said the benchmark fee will go down in the next few transfer windows. But it's easier for them to say because they are the buyers.

"Of course, the €150m-€200m (£131m-£175m) transfers are gone. But I think there is still a lot of value for players who come from Ajax. Well educated, experienced in winning and playing European football.

"Last year, we made verbal agreements with [Andre] Onana, [Nicolas] Tagliafico, Van de Beek to stay another season and then we look to help each other and find the next step in their careers. Nothing has changed. There won't be a 50% discount. The clubs can forget about that."

Van de Beek has again been in impressive form for Ajax during the 2019-20 campaign, scoring 10 times and registering 11 assists in 37 appearances in all competitions.

The midfielder's current deal with Erik ten Hag's side is due to expire in June 2022.
