Manchester United are allegedly working on a deal for Preston North End goalkeeper Freddie Woodman, who could move to Old Trafford on a free transfer.

Manchester United are reportedly currently working on a deal for Preston North End goalkeeper Freddie Woodman.

The 28-year-old's contract with Preston is due to expire at the end of June, and it is widely thought that the stopper will be on the move.

Woodman has made 44 appearances for his Championship club this season, keeping 17 clean sheets in the process, while he has previous experience of the Premier League, playing four times in the top flight for Newcastle United in 2021-22.

The Englishman had six separate loan spells during his time at Newcastle, but he left permanently for Preston in June 2022, and the goalkeeper has since made 138 appearances for the Lancashire outfit.

There has recently been speculation surrounding Woodman's future, and it was claimed earlier this month that Man United had expressed an interest in signing him to boost their goalkeeping department for the 2025-26 campaign.

Man United 'working on a deal' for Woodman

According to Football Insider, the 20-time English champions are now actively working on a deal for Woodman, and it is unlikely to be a complicated negotiation, as the goalkeeper will find it tough to turn down a switch to Old Trafford.

Woodman is highly unlikely to be a number one or a number two at the club, with the Englishman instead likely to fill the number three position, with Tom Heaton expected to retire from professional football this summer.

There could be an opportunity for Woodman to be heavily involved in Man United's pre-season preparations if a deal goes through early, as there is huge uncertainty in the goalkeeping department at Old Trafford.

Indeed, first-choice Andre Onana and second-choice Altay Bayindir are both facing uncertain futures, with one of those also likely to leave this summer.

Man United are believed to be considering signing a replacement for Onana due to the Cameroonian's ongoing struggles at the club, while Bayindir may depart in order to secure first-team football elsewhere.

Man United planning for a busy summer transfer window

The Red Devils are expected to be busy during this summer's transfer window, with deals for Wolverhampton Wanderers' Matheus Cunha and Ipswich Town's Liam Delap potentially being secured early in the market.

There will also be a number of exits in the upcoming market, with Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Antony among those set to move on, while Victor Lindelof, Christian Eriksen, Jonny Evans and Heaton are all out of contract.

Decisions will also need to be made on Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho, as the pair are also expected to be the subject of interest this summer following huge speculation during the January transfer window.
