Roma 'cannot afford Chris Smalling deal'

Roma 'cannot afford Chris Smalling deal'

Roma are reportedly unlikely to sign on-loan Manchester United centre-back Chris Smalling this summer as they cannot afford a deal for the Englishman.

The 30-year-old has spent the 2019-20 campaign on loan with Roma, making 28 appearances in all competitions for the Italian club, contributing two goals in the process.

The Serie A giants are keen to complete a permanent deal for the defender, but according to Gazzetta dello Sport, a move is unlikely due to United's €20m (£17.5m) asking price.

A recent report claimed that Smalling could leave Old Trafford this summer alongside Marcos Rojo and Phil Jones as part of a clear out.

Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal have also previously been credited with an interest in the former Fulham youngster, who has a contract with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side until the summer of 2022.

Smalling has made 323 appearances for the Red Devils in all competitions.
